Making Sports Accessible and Fun with Jane Wu

Let’s be honest, understanding and staying updated with sports leagues and players can be a lot of work. And sometimes we’re just too busy being boss ladies and running shit that we don’t have the time or energy it takes to tackle the big and slightly-intimidating world of sports. That’s where Goalposte comes in.

Goalposte is a daily newsletter sent straight to your inbox that summarizes the big stories in sports, in a fun and accessible way. Based out of Washington D.C., founder Jane Wu created Goalposte after seeing a huge void when it came to conversations with her male colleagues. Like any ambitious woman would do, she set out to find a solution that didn’t leave her (or others like her) in the dark when it came to sports. Learn more about Jane and Goalposte below!

Femme & Fortune: Tell us all about Goalposte!

Jane Wu: Goalposte is a daily email newsletter that summarizes the major sporting events of the day in a fun and accessible way for busy sports fans and novices alike. I noticed there were a lot of sports news sources and newsletters in the marketplace for avid fans, including all manner of obscure stories and sports minutia ranging from injuries to minor players to opinion pieces about hypothetical trades. Goalposte cuts through the noise and provides you with short summaries of the biggest stories of the day. It provides you just enough information and context to keep you up-to-date and in the know when talking to your co-workers, significant others, friends, or whomever else.

Femme & Fortune: How did the concept come to you to start Goalposte?

Jane Wu: The idea for Goalposte came to me during my time working as an attorney in New York City for a big law firm. I was staffed on a case representing Major League Baseball, which was exciting but also terrifying because I had no idea what was happening in baseball. As I got more entrenched in the case, I was invited to events and business development dinners with high-profile sports clients and law firm partners. All the while, I was on pins and needles that they would discover my big secret, so I would sit quietly while they talked sports. During that time, I felt like I was missing out on significant networking and relationship-building opportunities.

From this experience, I thought there was a need for a product that could make sports fun and accessible for anyone who wanted to learn more. In particular, I really wanted to help young professional women who work in male-dominated industries ‘get into the game’ so to speak.

janewu_023Femme & Fortune: What are some of your favorite aspects about being your own boss and running Goalposte?

Jane Wu: I love having control over my career and finding meaning and purpose in what I do. By being my own boss, I’m empowered to define my company’s mission, culture, and policies so that they are aligned with my values.

Femme & Fortune: What are you currently working on with your business?

Jane Wu: It’s football season so there is plenty to write about! In addition to the daily newsletters that summarize what’s going on, I’ve created team primers (http://www.goalposte.com/nfl-teams), so that even beginners can follow along with their local team.

I also recently started a Q&A series, spotlighting interesting women working in sports (http://www.goalposte.com/blog-home/). I’ve had the opportunity to interview sports entrepreneurs, writers, broadcasters, bloggers, and even an Olympian.

Femme & Fortune: Do you have a mantra for when times get busy or stressful?

Jane Wu: I don’t have a mantra, but I do try and take a deep breath and remind myself how good I have it. It’s easy to begin to feel downtrodden or overwhelmed when you’re deep in the weeds, but I find that taking a step back and keeping things in perspective is very helpful.

Femme & Fortune: When you’re not working on growing Goalposte, where can we find you?

Jane Wu: I try and spend my free time with family and friends. I keep active to destress, so you can often find me on a long run or at a spin class.
“Don’t be afraid to take risks.” – Jane Wu
Femme & Fortune: What’s one piece of advice you would give to aspiring CEOs?

Jane Wu: Don’t be afraid to take risks. I’ve always been risk-averse because my parents are first-generation immigrants.  I followed the path they wanted for me—I went to a good college, a good law school, and got a Big Law job, but I didn’t feel fulfilled. Starting Goalposte has been a terrifying leap, but it’s also been the most rewarding thing that I’ve ever done.

Femme & Fortune: Where can we follow along with Goalposte?

Jane Wu: You can follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!
