Nowadays, who isn’t connected to music at the touch of a button? Popular music applications, such as Spotify, iTunes and Pandora, all allow you to stream music for free, but now there’s a new player in town. Earlier this year, Reuters reported that Jay Z is buying Tidal, a new initiative to bring an exclusive music streaming service to music lovers.
Tidal users pay $10 per month for a regular subscription and $20 per month for an upgraded hi-def audio experience. Purchased from the Swedish company Aspiro for $56 million dollars, Jay Z plans to disrupt the music industry. Is he succeeding so far? We try the app out for ourselves.
Similar to Spotify, you can save your favorite artists, queue songs to listen to later, and share what you are listening to with your friends. So what sets Tidal apart? According to its website, unlike any other service in the market, Tidal offers high fidelity sound quality, high definition music videos and curated editorial content by experienced music journalists. Jay Z has offered equity in Tidal to A-list musicians, such as Kanye West and Coldplay, who would release newest music exclusively to Tidal to garner more users.
Overall, we find that Tidal is another luxury brand that is garnering its traction by celebrity association. While we highly appreciate Jay Z’s initiative to reset the value proposition of the music industry, we’re not quite ready to empty our pockets for a monthly subscription. Though if you’re any way involved in the music industry, this is the app you’ve been waiting for.
