Three Outfit Rules For Meeting Their Parents

The time has come: your partner wants you to meet his or her parents. By this time you two have sent flirty texts and pictures, gone on numerous brunch dates, talked life goals, and now you’re ready to take things a step further. You’re obviously going to win their parents over with your charm and wit, but here are a few tips to help you get ready.

Wear Something That Fits Properly

Chances are you may be a little nervous meeting your partner’s parents for the first time. To make yourself a little more comfortable, wear something that you won’t fuss over or tug at. If you’re constantly pulling at your clothes, it will be distracting and you might feel like everyone can tell you’re uncomfortable. It’s a good idea to try on an outfit before an important occasion, so that you can make sure everything fits the way you want it to. Those few minutes trying an outfit on can really make a difference.

Dress for the Occasion

When I first met my boyfriend’s mom, it was at a charitable nighttime walk called “Light the Night Walk” in November. I obviously wanted to look nice but it was cold out, so I ended up wearing a college sweatshirt and North Face fleece to stay warm. What she remembers about that night is that I was there, not what I had on. Dress appropriately for whatever activity or occasion you’re going to be doing with the parents. If you’re going to the family’s house for a Sunday football game, dressing in something casual and comfortable would be much better than wearing a dress and heels. Though if you’re going to a graduation dinner, maybe save your favorite ripped up jeans for another time.

Be Yourself

Your partner fell for the wonderful, funny, beautiful person you are and so will their parents. When meeting their parents for the first time, it’s important to be yourself. It’s exhausting to try to be someone you’re not – and why would you when you are so special? If you don’t normally wear stilettos, you don’t need to start in order to make them like you. Be presentable, but most importantly, be authentically you.
