Today’s #30Under30PHL lady is a current Drexel student with quite a list of accomplishments under her belt already. Meet Marina Lamanna everyone and welcome her to a list of fellow amazing women in Philadelphia!
1. How old are you?
2. What do you do?
I am the Lifestyle Assistant at Philadelphia magazine and a senior English major at Drexel University.
3. What neighborhood in Philly do you call home?
4. What is your favorite thing right now about Philly?
Everything is so collaborative and interdisciplinary right now. Nobody is restricted by his or her core interests.
5. What do you consider your greatest achievement thus far?
I’ve been doing internships since the beginning of sophomore year, so being able to balance both professional and academic interests has always been a source of pride for me.
6. If not yourself, who would you like to be?
Oh, I completely adore Mindy Kaling. She’s so eloquent and witty. I really admire what she’s doing with her career right now.
7. Your idea of happiness.
Familial, professional, and social happiness—just overall contentedness.
8. Guiltiest pleasure?
Netflix, Hulu, XFinity. I have accounts for all of them and it’s bad. Who needs a television anymore when there are so many other options?
9. Favorite inspirational quote?
“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” Alan Watts.
10. What do you appreciate the most in your friends?
Their collective unwavering passion always leaves me so inspired. Often, our professional interests differ drastically so they’re a constant source of new ideas.
11. Favorite food in Philly?
Distrito’s mahi mahi tacos.
12. Favorite drink in Philly?
Mulled wine. Anywhere. Any time of the year.
13. Favorite song right now?
“Step” by Vampire Weekend.
14. A book you plan on reading?
Women in Clothes by Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits, Leanne Shapton, and 639 others.
15. A book that powerfully impacted your life?
“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” Judy Blume inadvertently gave me “the talk” before my own mother did.
16. Name one historical figure you would like to have coffee with.
I think I’d enjoy a cup of tea with Jane Austen. Oh! Or maybe Eleanor Roosevelt.
17. How do you like your coffee?
No sugar, lots of soy milk.
18. Your main fault.
I’m a total homebody and thus completely content in my apartment. Sometimes I need a good kick in the butt to agree to leave.
19. What is your most prized material possession?
My parents gave me the most beautiful sapphire ring that’s a much smaller version of Lady Diana’s (and subsequently Kate Middleton’s) engagement ring. I can’t leave my house without it.
20. Your biggest failure.
I’m so lucky that I’ve been in this college bubble for the last three years that’s super-supportive and accepting, so I don’t feel like I’ve had any notable failures yet per se. Ask me this question in a year!
21. What you learned from that failure?
Because I’ve been relatively sheltered from major failure thus far, I think what is most important is that I know failure is inevitable. However, it’s more important to take those failures in stride and to be pragmatic.
22. What is your greatest fear?
I’m such a planner. I worry that I may bypass a potential opportunity because it doesn’t fit into my plan.
23. Where will you be in 30 years?
Hopefully, I will still be writing and editing. I try not to bog myself down with a specific title aspiration or anything. I’m excited to see how the publishing industry will evolve over the next 30 years.
24. Favorite thing to do on a Sunday?
I love starting the day with a soy latte and really just spending the day reading and preparing for the week.
25. Best date spot?
Zavinos. Pizza and wine is a perfect first date dinner.
26. What does happiness mean to you?
Happiness for me is a massive stack of magazines and a bottomless tea kettle.
27. Twitter or Instagram?
28. Describe Philly in a Tweet.
Philly is for lovers, haters, innovators, inventors, thinkers, teachers, doers, and trailblazers.
29. Who should everyone follow on Instagram?
I’m really into United by Blue’s Instagram; it’s so dreamy. The ocean views and landscapes are such pleasant images.
30. Pats or Genos?
Neither—I’m a Pescetarian!
