Your offer letter is signed and you’re ready to start your new 9-5 gig, congrats! The transition to a full-time position brings a new level of security but also a new set of responsibilities. We all know hard work and dedication are key, but what about managing your new schedule and looking the part? Below are a few tips every full-time Femme should know prior to taking the professional world by storm.

Don’t Take The “9-5” So Literally

Be the first to arrive and the last to leave – now that isn’t to suggest that you should sit there into the wee hours of the night while a team member fights a tight deadline. However, your boss will take note if you are consistently hard at work by the time he/she arrives and your chair isn’t spinning as you race out of the office promptly at 5pm each night.

Extend Your Network

It’s always important to have an open and honest dialogue with your boss, but it is also important to have someone outside of your direct team who you can talk to, ask questions, and seek advice from. I remember when I first started working a full-time job, and I sought out a mentor who became a great resource for me as I started my career. Whether it’s how much to invest in your first 401K, how to handle conflict with a colleague or when the right time to make a career move is, having a mentor with whom you can talk freely with is invaluable. Not only will this prove to be a great resource in your current role but will also provide a long standing reference on your resume and lasting friendship.

Keep An Eye On Social Media

When it comes to social media, precede with cautionAfter your first week at work you may be greeted with a slew of Facebook and Instagram requests from your new coworkers, but be careful. Before you accept their friend requests, think about the types of posts and images you share publicly. Are they appropriate enough that you’d want your colleagues to see them? Sometimes it’s best to keep your personal life personal. This will also help to maintain a strong level of professionalism in the office and alleviate the potential of any drama. You will come to spend more time with your colleagues than nearly anyone else, and yes, over time many will become close friends. But until then, maintain that line in the sand.

Look The Part

One thing my first boss always said to me was, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” It’s important that when it comes to your wardrobe you play it safe and play it smart. Work is not the place to test out new trends or styles – leave that for a night out with the girls. Depending on the dress code at your office you may have some leniency in what you’re required to wear, but when in doubt always err on the side of caution. Invest in a few staples which work well with one another to extend your wardrobe and provide you with plenty of options without breaking the bank. 

Stay Active

I was fully prepared to take on the freshman 15 in college but I wish someone had warned me about the few pounds which would creep in during my first few months at work. Between catered office lunches, post-work events and sitting for a majority of the day, it’s a real threat. Your schedule will change dramatically with a full-time gig, so it’s important to take care of yourself and stay active.  I found that my weekends are still the best time to get in a long run or lengthy spin class but I try and get to the gym or hit the pavement at least twice during the workweek. On busy days, take a 30 minute break and get outside for a walk, anything goes! This will not only keep those skinny jeans intact but a little workout will also help to avoid stress and blow off steam after a long day.
