This winter doesn’t seem to have an end in sight so let’s make the best of it with some awesome winter cocktails! There’s nothing as satisfying as a good cocktail and a roaring fireplace. So, while we can, let’s celebrate the snow and the cold with some soothing seasonal drinks.
1. Ultimate Bloody Mary (serves 2)
This is a recipe inspired by the amazing London restaurateur, Jamie Oliver. He once spoke of this drink from one of his restaurants, Barbacoa. They typically make this with some jalapeno infused vodka and thick-cut bacon. The bacon of course is optional but it is such an amazing addition to a classic brunch drink. This version is heartier with its savory twist.

- 16 ounces (1/2 quart) of tomato juice
- 2 oz vodka
- 2 tbsp barbeque sauce
- pinch of paprika, celery seed and salt (or celery salt)
- squeeze of 1/4 lemon
- thick-cut cooked bacon
- In a blender or shaker, mix tomato juice, vodka sauce, paprika, celery seed, salt and lemon. Mix well
- In a glass filled with ice, pour the mixture.
- Finish with a cut of celery and a piece of thick cut bacon. Mmm, delish!
2. Glogg (serves 4)
- 1 750-ml bottle of medium-bodied fruity red wine
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup slivered almonds
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 cloves
- 8 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1/4 cup schnapps
- 1/4 cup brandy
- Pour 1 bottle into a saucepan over medium heat and add sugar, raisins and almonds. Stir to dissolve sugar.
- Place spices into a spice bag and let steep in wine mixture to infuse flavors. Bring wine into a boil, then turn off, and cover the saucepan. Let spices infuse for at least 1 hour to 3 hours.
- When ready to serve, add schnapps and brandy. Reheat almost to a boil and serve in heat-proof glasses with small spoons.
3. Mulled Hot Cider (serves 4)
- 5 cups of apple cider
- 1/2 cup whiskey
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- thin strip of lemon peel
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 8 cloves
- Place all ingredients into a saucepan and heat over medium heat. Stir often until sugar is dissolved.
- Turn off heat and leave covered for 30 minutes to allow spices to infuse.
- Before serving, bring back almost to a boil, remove spices and serve in heat-proof glasses
4. Turkish Chocolate (serves 1)
- 2 oz vodka
- 2 tsp white creme de cacao
- 2 dashes rose water
- 1/4 lemon
- unsweetened cocoa powder
- Take a chilled martini glass and wet the rim with juice from the lemon. Dip the rim of the glass into cocoa powder
- Place all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake until drink is well chilled, then pour into martini glass.
5. Hot Spiked Gianduja (serves 2)
“Gianduja” is an Italian term for confections made with a mixture of chocolate and hazelnuts. In reality, this is a hot chocolate recipe made with Nutella for that amazing hazelnut twist. This is the ultimate grown-up hot chocolate.
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 cup Nutella
- 6 tbsp bourbon
- 6 tbsp spiced rum
- In a small saucepan, heat whole milk over medium-high heat until bubbles appear on the sides of the pan. Stir often to avoid burning and formation of milk film.
- Add nutella and mix until melted. Then add bourbon and rum. Serve hot and enjoy immediately. YUM!
